Every echo is a new form of the original. When a thought manifests itself through language it instantly becomes a repetition of this thought, and therefore an echo. The echo, thus the spoken word, becomes more important than the thought – the repetition becomes more valuable than the original – and the past replaces the present.
It took a while until I found back to myself deals with the characteristics of timbre and questions the function of hearing as an aid to orientation. The sound installation consists of a microphone and a couple of speakers and effect pedals that I installed in the woods. The microphone responds to ambient noise as well as voices and reflects them as a multiple echo in different areas of the forest. The ear perceives geometric space through timbre. It took a while until I found back to myself simulates space through an artificially generated timbre. It irritates the ear and provokes a separation of spacial and temporal correlation.
