Ça roule?

Video and sound montage
8:44 min.
2016

Ça roule? (French = How’s it going?) uses the system of ubiquitous video surveillance to create a both real and virtual performance. Spatially and temporally separated locations are connected by a roll of toilet paper, creating an anamorphic path as an allusion to the absurdity of permanent video surveillance and state control.

Potentially locatable sites were sought through websites such as insecam.org*, which provide online access to surveillance cameras. Thanks to clues visible on the
videos and Google StreetView, six cameras were located in Austria and France, the artists’ countries of origin.

*Insecam.org is a publicly accessible website that lists unencrypted video surveillance cameras by country and region. The cameras provide unintentional views into private spaces and workplaces.
